Mushroom Manga~ *CNY Edition 1*

Hello to all of you, arawr & I had a busy weekend! May I say that you’re all looking very fine on the 5th day of Chinese New Year.

Oh? Why, thank you.

That was me, assuming that I got the compliment back.

Anyway, here’s our first Mushroom Manga *CNY edition* post, hope you enjoy the selection:

Ookami-Heika no Hanayome/The Wolf King’s Bride

Author/Artist: Kauta Mato

Genre: Comedy, Historical, Romance, Shoujo

Yuurin, the daughter of a low ranking government officer, came to the royal palace after hearing of a job with higher wages. However, that job is to act as the bride of Haku Reishou, who is feared as being the ruthless and heartless “His Majesty, the Wolf”. In the royal palace where conspiracies swirl, after learning His Majesty’s secret, Yuurin ends up stuck being his temporary bride…?!

Oh how exciting this is! I’ve been wanting to talk about The Wolf King’s Bride for a while & I got my wish thanks to CNY. If you’ve read/watched The Story of Saiunkoku/Tale of the Land of Colored Clouds, The Wolf King’s Bride is similar except it focuses on romance.

The Story of Saiunkoku had quite a few political &  cultural aims and that’s the main difference between the two.

In terms of characterisation, I love the leading lady since she possess a degree of determination & the fact that she takes action instead of, I don’t frailing around(Like Magikarp?)

The king’s personality is likely to draw you in through his possession of an alter-ego, it really is cute. The art is nice & simple and really likable, I especially love the King’s character design, his hair in particular is especially unusual!

It’s a really simple story so far and I’m not quite sure how it’ll develop since the couple has already been set up together, the real jolt that makes me love it is to see how the romance develop. Of course, we want to see the heroine through to the end, but looking at the historical Chinese theme running in the story, there might be some love rivalry in the future, since the king is permitted to hold many concubines.

It is a nice easy read so far, so try this if you’re looking for a  no-hassle romance with a Chinese themed fair.

Saiyuki/Gensomaden Saiyuki/Journey to the West

Author/Artist: Minekura Kazuya

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Historical, Martial Arts, Shounen, Supernatural

Having been assigned by the human elders the mission of stopping a mystical plague that has afflicted the Youkai with madness, Genjyo Sanzo assembles his team of Youkai warriors, desperately hoping that the disease will not affect them. He sets up qualifying tests that will help him determine the loyalty and worth of Cho Hakkai, Son Goku and Sha Gojyo. The team then journeys west to rid the land of madness.

In the process of selecting content for this CNY Mushroom Manga post, I thought Saiyuki would be perfect since it is loosely based on the Chinese Novel – Journey to the West.  I’ve come across countless renditions of Journey to the West from Dramas to beyond.

There are countless of sequels & prequels of Saiyuki but I’ve really just looked at the original. Simply, Saiyuki. The vital background information is all fed slowly which makes the clear & easy to follow even though the plot may sound rather complicated.

The original story featured the characters to be all mutant-y such presenting  pig-monsters & humanoid monkeys literally so this version is much easier of the eye for many. The monk(Sanzo) in Saiyuki is armed and cool-er too, and it has a far more modern setting to keep up with younger readers. There’s a lot of good action too.

Try reading Saiyuki if you’re looking for a more upbeat & industrialised version of the original epic. This is a completed work. If you want more, there are a total of 4 prequels & sequels. Have a fantastic day ahead.

You're right, his hair is definitely different. It kind of reminds me of Yuki's from Fruits Basket :3
I like that second shot – the one where the king is all, hey, whatcha got there? And the girl is all, give me a break. This is the scary king?

I need to watch my Saiyuki DVDs ^^; (once again, on the shelf, still in its plastic wrap). I did watch a bunch of the earlier episodes back in HS. I had no idea what was going on except that feudal China had jeeps and really good looking bishies ~
And my friend was very adamant about Goku x Sanzo
