The Thing About Blood-C

I have to admit. When I saw the Summer Anime Line-up I just thought it was ok. Most of it didn’t really catch my interest, and ironically it those that I wasn’t so pumped up about that ended up being the ones I loved the most; Mawaru Penguindrum, Kamisama Dolls and – oddly enough – The iDOLM@STER. On the other hand, one of the more anticipated ones turned out to be a huge letdown – namely, Blood-C.

There are a few spoilers in this post, but nothing much contributes to the story since nothing much happens so you probably won’t have to worry.

I was really excited. Blood + was among the first non-childish anime I watched, and it made a pretty big impact on me. There’s also the whole CLAMP production that got my attention – I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan of theirs, but I do like their works. That was the driving force behind me grinding my teeth and watching the first few episodes of Blood-C until I finally gave up.

More Summer Rants!

So this rant is a little bit late then I intended, but it’s the third and final instalment for my summer rants! If I had the time or motivation, I might have done something more detailed like I did in spring but… a lot of it is very underwhelming, I’ll probably go off on a tangent with Mawaru Penguindrum again and I really, really have no time right now @_@

As usual, I list the anime according to my preferences. While the previous summer rants showed some promise, the second half of this post is congested with all the not-that-great anime that everyone had been expecting from the summer.

But whatever. My favourite for this season is probably going to end up as one of my all-time favourites, so I’m just going to mention it once more since I can’t get enough of it.

Mawaru Penguindrum

Family drama where little sis dies, but then she gets resurrected after being possessed by a penguin hat.

I’ve got my special rant for it right here, but long story short – it’s my favourite for this season. The questioning of fate, the light hearted humour, the ridiculous situations with the round round penguins and that tang of family angst is just perfect. Definite recommendation! I’ve watched the first episode about 6 times and the second one about 3 or 4. I am not obsessed.

Thank God it’s lined up for 24 episodes!

Special Summer Rant – Mawaru Penguindrum

Mawaru Penguindrum (輪るピングドラム) / Revolving Penguin Drum

Three siblings, twins Kanba and Shouma, and the in-and-out-of-the-hospital Himari who’s in poor health, live together at the Takakura home. One day, when the siblings are out on a trip to the aquarium, Himari collapses. The doctors state that nothing can be done for her anymore, but then, a miracle occurs…

Genre: Slice of life, Comedy, Fantasy

Status: Currently airing, planned for 24 episodes

Directed by Ikuhara Kuniko (Sailormoon and Revolutionary Girl Utena), who also did the script, screenplay and series composition. Produced by Brain’s Base and Mainichi Broadcasting.

———

It’s official. This is my favourite for the season. This summer where there’s a significant cesspool of not-so-great anime, this is like the Madonna among the Jenna Roses. I really, really liked the way the narration started and ended that first episode about fate – yes, there have been stories that went all ‘UP YOURS, FATE AND DESTINY!’, but this monologue went into a whole cycle and chain of why fate is Hitler. It’s probably what ensnared me from the beginning.

The fact that the OP (Nornir by Ruetsuko Yakushima Metropolitan Orchestra) that followed just next to tugged my heartstrings and pulled out my heart probably has a lot to do with how I’m obsessing over this after the first friggin episode. Continue reading

Summer Anime 2011 Rants

When I first saw the summer line-up, I was quite excited but I wasn’t that impressed. A small part of me kinda felt like not a lot of time would be spent watching anime this season; but after watching the handful that I have, I am really quite glad that it probably won’t turn out that way. I still find the autumn/fall line-up a lot more interesting, but I’ll try to appreciate the present a bit more.

As for the present spring anime that are still continuing, I’m still following Steins Gate, Tiger & Bunny, Hanasaku Iroha and Ao no Exorcist. It’s quite nice to watch and listen to some of the new OPs and EDs. =D

Now, with some music to get us started and all that said, on with the rants!

Natsume Yuujinchou San

Dude who can see spirits, inherits the ‘book of friends’ that used to belong to his grandma that contains the names of spirits. Returns their names to them before they get too pissed off using his spit and some CO2.

The highly anticipated third season of Midorikawa Yuki’s most successful series to date – Natsume Yuujinchou. Out of all the other summer anime, this was probably the one I was waiting for the most. If you’ve been waiting for it, just like me and chungky here… I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. It’s been awhile since I watched Natsume Yuujinchou Zoku, but from the moment I started watching Natsume Yuujinchou San, all the feelings from before came rushing back – the nostalgia, the bitter sweetness and that magical feeling I only seem to get from this anime.

Summer Anime 2011! *Updated

*6/6/2011: Updated! As usual, all credits go to moetron – it’ll also be more reliable to get the updates from there so go check it out from time to time =)

Btw Nyanpire the Animation looks too bloody cute to be true

>–<

Hello my dearies! How’s all the Spring Anime 2011 holding up for you? Sucks? Neutral? Absolutely mind-blasting? Well whatever it is, once more we can look forward to the next season’s lineup – Summer 2011!

This lineup isn’t complete, it’s just what’s been announced so far. And, as usual, I just rip it off moetron lol

Let’s see…. I know Chungky is suuuuper looking forward to Natsume Yuujin-Chou San, and I myself am really excited for Usagi Drops (highly recommended slice-of-life manga!) I’ve also been pretty curious about Blood-C ever since I heard of it a couple of months back, especially since its a new anime by CLAMP.

I seriously can’t wait for the Air Gear OAD either – Air Gear’s one of the awesomest reads I’ve come across, and when it’s all animated and everyone’s jumping all over the place… Wheeeeeeeeee….. XD

There’s quite a lot of movies I am seriously digging as well – Heart no Kuni Alice and FMA: Milos no Seinaru Hoshi in particular… Gahhh we we we so excitedddd..!!

Well looks like this won’t be a boring summer at least =D

Howz bout yo faves? XD

-arawr >=3

Btw I’ll be taking a backseat to the blogging front while I’m preparing for my exams, so allow chungky to accommodate you until the end of May =3

Summer Adaptations – Ikoku Meiro no Croisée & Usagi Drop

I’m back home now for my summer holidays, so I decided to make this post a little manga sneak peak for two of the upcoming anime this Summer 2011, Ikoku Meiro no Croisée and Usagi Drop.

Before that though, if you want the summaries and trailers for most of the summer anime, you can go check out squidoo. Hope it helps! =D

Moving on!

Ikoku Meiro no Croisée (異国迷路のクロワーゼ)

Manga-ka: Takeda Hinata

Genre: Historical, Romance, Shounen, Slice-of-life

During the second half of the 19th century, Europe became intrigued by the Japanese culture. A Japanese girl named Yune travels to France, where she started working in the lower parts of a town in Paris at a craft store called Enseignes du Roy. She and the store owner named Claude communicate with each other in order to get over their cultural differences. This is the story of Yune’s stay in Paris.

———————–

I picked this up shortly before I realised it would be aired in the summer, and I have to say that it is definitely one of the anime that I am really looking forward to. From the art, to the story, to the characters and setting… everything is just simply so beautifully executed.

After reading it the first time round, I really wanted to mushroom it. It’s the 21st century, and having to live and study in a foreign country hasn’t been that easy for me – I can only imagine that it should be about 50 times worse for the main character in the 19th century, who knows next to nothing about French culture or its language. Topping it off with the fact all it took for her to travel halfway across the world was her thirst for French culture (and that she’s a kid) makes Ikoku Meiro no Croisée  really something that is worth reading.
