Summer Anime 2013 – Summaries, PVs, Links and Rants

So it’s not quite the end of the Spring Anime yet, but it’s getting quite close.Out of curiosity, I went off to see what’s on for this Summer, and thought I’d share it here on Manga Weekend (It’s been a long, long while since I’ve done on of these posts!) I’ve pretty much got all the summaries from MyAnimeList, and as usual I’ve got the anime listing from The Fansub Wiki. Both really good websites, so o check them out! =D

I’ll just be splitting it up into anime I’ll definitely be following, anime I might be following, and anime that I’ve already ditched before even giving it a chance (Honestly I think that I’ve put wayyy too much into the first category). If you think that there’s any in the last category that shouldn’t be there, convince me in the comments below!

^_^ ANIME: I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO! ^_^

Gin no Saji: Silver Spoon by A-1 Pictures

Yugo Hachiken dreams of life separated from his family, so he takes the initiative by enrolling in an agriculture school. He thinks, with his talent in studying, no problems will arise no matter what kind of school he attends. He is proven wrong very quickly. Raised as a city boy, he is forced to uncover the inconvenient truth about agricultural life. Enjoy the story of Hachiken, as he tries to keep up with his new friends, farmers’ heirs, who are already accustomed to the harsh world of farming. With no clear goals or understanding of farming life, how will Hachiken survive this new, cruel reality? The story of a sweat, tear, and mud-stained youth begins!

Gin no Saji - Silver Spoon Anime

Website

Gin no Saji is an original work by Arakawa Hiromu, the manga-ka for Full Metal Alchemist. From the summary, you’d probably notice that it’s got nothing to do with alchemy or philosopher stones – in fact, it’s got to do with pretty much a high school farm. On top of it being very far from the usual high-school life setting, it’s gives this very warm slice-of-life feeling, but at the same time retaining the fun from a shounen/comedy genre. Definite recommendation!

Blood Lad by Brain’s Base

Staz is the vampire boss of a section of the demon world, but he has little interest in human blood. He’s more infatuated with Japanese culture. When he learns that Yanagi Fuyumi, a Japanese teenage girl, accidentally wanders into the demon city, he jumps to the occasion. However, while Staz deals with an intruder on his turf, the oblivious Fuyumi is killed by a monster and becomes a wandering ghost. The disappointed Staz vows to her that he will find a way to bring Fuyumi back to life

Website

I remember reading the manga and laughing a lot. So that’s enough for me to look out for it =D

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai: Megami-hen (The World God Only Knows) by Manglobe

3rd Season of Kaminomi.

Katsuragi Keima is known on the net as the god of getting the girls while in real life he’s known as otamegane and he hates all real girls. However he is approached by Elsie, a devil from hell, to help her in catching runaway spirits that hide in people. Apparently the spirits only hide in the hearts of girls and the only way to get the souls out is by making the girl fall in love so the spirit gets forced out. And he’s not allowed to fail or he will lose his head.

Website

Kaminomi doh. If you haven’t watched it from the first season, you really are missing out on a lot. If you’re avoiding Kaminomi because of the harem genre, don’t. I’d have to say, out of all the harem manga/anime I’ve come across, Kaminomi is possibly the only where I don’t feel that the girls are there just to glorify the hero. Because of the way the story is set and the way the protagonist really just is, it makes it seem as if each girl really is her own special character and the heroine of her own story. I’ll rant more on it another time.

Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou by GONZO

A nonsense comical mystery. Harumi Kazuhito is a high school boy who loves books and is a fan of novelist Natsuno Kirihime. One day, he finds Kirihime writing at a cafe, about to be shot by a robber. He protects her from the attack but is killed instead. Through the supernatural power of a book-worm, he is reincarnated as a dachshund dog. Kazuhito (as a dog) writhes in a painful bookless life, when a sadistic woman carrying a pair of scissors offers him help. She is Kirihime herself.

Website

Well the summary started with saying it was a nonsensical anime. So of course I’d choose it. Hope it’ll be good!

Senyuu (Season 2) by Ordet/LIDEN FILMS

Second season of Senyuu.

Satan Rchimedes returns to the earth after being sealed for one thousand years by a hero. The King tries to seal Satan once again by dispatching descendants of the hero. However, it’s troublesome to find the genuine descendant, so the king chooses 75 hero-like people. This is the adventure of Alba, hero no.45, and his monitoring fighter Ross.

Website

Hahaha love this show. It’s one of those 5-minute anime with some stupid comedy. Absolutely hilarious.

Monogatari Series: Second Season by Shaft

Adaptation of the second season of the Monogatari Series.

The story centers on Koyomi Araragi, a third year high school student who has recently survived a vampire attack, and finds himself mixed up with all kinds of apparitions: gods, ghosts, myths, and spirits.

Website

Well I follow the Monogatari series – so yes. I’ll keep watching. For those of you who haven’t watched Bakemonogatari or any of the others, just try one episode. If anything, for the experience of it. The style is very unique and different from any other anime, and the music always complements the atmosphere so well. So even if not for the story, definitely for the experience.

Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya by Silver Link

Spin-off of Fate/stay night with Illyasviel von Einzbern as the protagonist, living an alternate life as a school girl.

Website

Well it’s part of the Fate series, and I do like Ilya. I hope it’s a story where she’s happy =’D

Uchouten Kazoku by P.A. Works

In Kyoto, there are three kinds of residents: humans, raccoon dogs, and tengu. Shimogamo Yasaburou is the third son of the Shimogamo raccoon dog family. His father, Souichirou, had been the head of Kyoto raccoon dog community until he was eaten by the human members of “Friday Club”. While taking care of old tengu, fighting with other raccoon dogs, and playing with a psychic human girl, Yasaburou approaches the truth of his father’s death.

Website

Well it sounds cute (tanuki!) and if P.A. Works doesn’t screw me up again this season as it did with RDG (good summary, but look what’s gone on with it now and look who’s still watching it) I’ll follow it.

Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei – The Animation by Lerche

A group of 15 elite high school students are gathered at a very special, high class high school. To graduate from this high school essentially means you’ll succeed in life, but graduating is very difficult. The school is presided over by a bear called Monokuma, and he explains to them that their graduation hinges around committing a murder. The only way to graduate is to kill one of your classmates and get away with it. If the other classmates discover the identity of the killer, the killer is the only one executed. However, if they fail to catch the killer, only the killer graduates and the others are annihilated. Which of the 15 will survive the bloodbath to come?

Website

The kind of death-game anime, sounds interesting so I’ll give it a go. I do like an anime which has a take on the psychological genre with all the classmate killing

Gatchaman Crowds  by Tatsunoko Production

The story is set in Japan in the early summer of 2015. 180,000 people live in Tachikawa City, the “second metropolis” of the Tokyo area. Among them are “Gatchaman” — warriors who fight in special reinforced suits powered by “NOTE,” the manifestation of special spiritual powers in living beings. A council has scouted a group of individuals with latent powers to protect Earth from alien criminals. In recent years, the council has assigned Gatchaman warriors to deal with the mysterious entity known as “MESS.”

Website

Sounds interesting, looks promising and it does show potential so… yep. I’ll give it a go

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi by MADHOUSE

God abandoned the world on Sunday. As a result, nobody in the world can die or reproduce. A little girl, Ai, is the gravekeeper for a village. She has prepared 47 graves for the eventual deaths of every member of the village. Later, a boy who identifies himself as “Hampnie Hambart, the ‘Man-eating Toy’,” which is coincidentally the name that Ai’s mother left behind as the name of her father, arrives in the village and slaughters everybody. Just what is going on?

Website

Sounds like the kind of anime that I should really wait until the whole season’s over before watching, since everything gets revealed at the end but I’d probably watch it when it comes out and get suckered as usual. Oh well.

Tokurei Sochi Dantai Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu by GAINAX

Yura Yamato has just arrived at the high school division of Stella Women’s Academy, when Sonora Kashima invites her to join a club called “C³”. Sonora is the third-year student who became the new head of this club for military survival games. The other members include two second-year students (part-Japanese Karila Hatsuse and G36K-wielding Honoka Mutsu) and two other new students (Rento Kirishima whose family runs a Japanese sweets shop and the really short Yachiyo Hinata).

Website

Same thing, looks interesting, sounds promising, I’ll give it a go

@_@ ANIME: IF I’VE GOT THE TIME @_@

Kimi no Iru Machi ~A Town Where You Live~ by Gonzo

Eba Yuzuki, a girl from Tokyo moves to a countryside to attend high school. She lives together with a guy named Kirishima Haruto whose father is an apprentice of Eba’s father. Haruto never agrees to let Yuzuki stay at his house and always rejects her. Another girl, Kanzaki Nanami, comes whom Haruto might be in love with. So… what will happen in this story?

Website

I read the manga at one point, and I do remember liking it but I did stop. Anyway unless in very special cases (e.g. Gin no Saji) I don’t really see the point of watching an anime adaptation of a drama manga. It’s not like an action adaptation where you’d get to see all the special effects – I’m not particularly desperate to watch hand-holding with sparkles in the background and sappy BGM.

But it is a good story. Check it out if you’re into shounen drama.

Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! (It’s Not My Fault That I’m Not Popular!)

Kuroki Tomoko is a super popular, high school girl who has had 50 years of dating experience and 100 boys… in the Otome game world. In the real world, she is a 15-year-old shut in who has all of the qualities of a “mojo” (a gloomy or unpopular woman).

However, when school isn’t going as she expected, and she isn’t as popular as she had thought she was, she takes a look at herself in the mirror for the first time in a few years, and has some shocking revelations…

Website

Read the manga, and it’s good but I wouldn’t say it’s absolutely brilliant. The only time I really found it hilarious was when she interacted with others, but seeing as she’s kind of a loner and talks to herself most of the time, the really funny moments were a bit sparsely spread out for me. But if you’re into the sort of story that delves into the mind of a weird girl, you’ve found your anime.

The Midnight Animals by GONZO

A series of CG anime shorts that will stream on the Hikari TV internet service beginning this August. The anime shorts will revolve around African animals with diva-personalities that gather at night to “wax poetic.”

Website

Sounds like a ridiculous concept. A bit too weird, but sounds like a funny weird, and I like funny – I dunno it depends on my time I suppose

Free! by KyoAni/Animation Do

The story revolves around Haruka Nanase, a boy who has always loved to be immersed in water, and to swim in it. Before graduating from elementary school, he participated in a swimming tournament along with his fellow swimming club members, Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka. After achieving victory, each of the boys went their separate ways.

Time passed, and in the middle of their uneventful high school lives Rin appears and challenges Haruka to a match, showing Haruka his overwhelming power. Not wanting it to end like this, Haruka, gathers together Makoto and Nagisa once again and brings a new member named Rei Ryugazaki to create the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club in order to defeat Rin.

Website

Hahaha okay so I heard about this anime from chungky first, who told me the netizens were all having a heated debate on why KyoAni should stick to cute girls and not do some sort of anime geared for a female audience. As a swimming anime, I suppose the fan service would be directed towards them as well. (If you watch the PV, like 10 secs or something into it the dude is flipping his hair and I think that’s the fan-service. I dunno this is odd territory for me.)

I might really just watch this just to see how fan service-y it’ll get – i.e. will KyoAni focus more on the story or on the guys taking off their shirts. Although I don’t know why, in general the human body doesn’t look as appealing to me when it’s an anime/manga geared for a female audience. Manga/anime that target female audience don’t usually sell fan service through their art though, they sell it through all this everything-but-explicitly-announced-BL relationships. Which they might as well make full out BL. The fans want it, you’re selling it, what’s with the grey area?!?

Genei ya Kakeru Taiyou (The Sun Penetrates the Illusions) by AIC

An original anime series by AIC and Aniplex, The story is set on 6 girls that tries to solve mysterious incidents. In a world where the “Tarot Cards” have the power to read the fate. The promotional video reveals that Mai Kadowaki, Eri Kitamura, Sora Tokui, and Yuiko Tatsumi will lead the cast.

Website

…didn’t find much further than that but I wasn’t trying that hard either to be fair. So can’t really judge it, but might bother watching if it stands out this summer.
So I’ve actually gone out and found out a bit more about this anime, and it does sound more interesting that I initially couldn’t be bothered to find out about so I’ll give it a more of a chance this season =)

Servant x Service by A-1 Pictures

Anime about the staff of the health and welfare section of the ward office of a certain city. Newcomers Hasebe Yutaka, Yamagami, Miyoshi Saya, and their supervisor Ichimiya Taishi go through the everyday quirks of working at their office.

Website

Sounds pretty okay, but there’s a lot of other stuff to watch this season (too much??) but I’d give it a go

=_= ANIME: I’M NOT EVEN BOTHERING WITH =_=

Kingdom 2 by Pierrot

Second season of Kingdom.

In the Warring States Period of ancient China (475-221 BCE), Shin and Hyou are war-orphans in the kingdom of Qin. They dream of one day proving themselves on the battlefield. One day, however, Hyou is taken to the palace by a minister. Winding up on the losing side of a power-struggle, Hyou manages to return to the village, barely alive. Shin then meets a boy who closely resembles Hyou, Ei Sei. For now he is the king of Qin; later he will become the emperor Shi Huangdi.

Website

Well I’m not too into the historical genre, plus I didn’t even see the first season so.

Gifuu Doudou!! Naoe Kanetsugu – Maeda Keiji Sakegatar by Studio DEEN

The Sengoku era gave birth to many historical legends. One of them is Naoe Kanetsuku, the brilliant military general of the Uesugi family. Together with Maeda Keiji, a legendary warrior on the battlefield, who become lifelong friends with each other, they carve out a piece of history in the most dangerous and volatile time in Japan’s history. The two men recall their beginnings and the journey they took to get to the accomplished position they now sit at.

Website

Um. Nah. Not historical. And the art looks – well – shady. As in like. Suspicious.

Rozen Maiden (2013) by Studio DEEN

Following up from the previous Rozen Maiden series, that ended in 2005

She now realizes that Suigintou’s fate may very well befall the other Dolls, for the appearance of the last Doll signals the beginning of the end of the Alice Games.

Website

Well I didn’t watch season 1, so I’ll probably hold it off until then. Chungky really likes Rozen Maiden though, maybe my charming partner can provide some coverage on it instead this summer

Senki Zesshou Symphogear G: In the Distance, That Day, When the Star Became Music… by Satelight

Second season of Senki Zesshou.

Two years ago, a pair of idols, Tsubasa Kazanari and Kanade Amou, collectively known as ZweiWing, fought against an alien race known as Noise using armor known as Symphogear. To protect a girl named Hibiki Tachibana, who got severely wounded by the Noise, Kanade sacrificed herself. Two years later, as Tsubasa has fought the Noise alone, Hibiki ends up gaining the same power as Kanade.

Website

Gosh this is a long title. Second season of the other Senki Zesshou which I remember not being impressed by. So, nope.

Fantasista Doll by Amber Film Works

This original story revolves around cute dolls who fight and power up with special cards.

Website

Well the dolls look cute. But it looks like an anime for 10-year-olds. But there are anime meant for 10-year olds that I like anyway (e.g. Cardcaptor Sakura and Shugo Chara) so we’ll see.

But ever since OreImo, all mahou shoujo anime look like Starwitch Dance Meruru or whatever it was called.

And oh who am I kidding I’ll probably won’t remember this anime after this post.

Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist

The story revolves around William, an aristocratic family’s progeny with rare intellect. One day, his uncle lost his possessions after his business failed. Fearing that his family’s name has been tarnished, William returns home and searches with his family’s butler for anything that can be converted into cash. A search of the premises yields an underground room left by an ancestor. In the room is a magical seal, and William unintentionally summons a devil. The summoned devil tells William his name Dantalion, and reveals that William is the designator who can choose the acting ruler of the demon world.

Website

Well. It’s really just not my cup of tea. It’s got the everything-but-explicitly-announced-BL feel to it. Which I’ve always just found to be, well, odd. Either be a BL anime, or don’t!

Genshiken Nidaime by Production I.G.

New series of Genshiken, adapted from the manga

It’s the spring of freshman year, and Kanji Sasahara is in a quandary. Should he fulfill his long-cherished dream of joining an otaku club? Saki Kasukabe also faces a dilemma. Kanji triumphs where Saki fails, when both Kanji and Kousaka sign up for Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture.

Undeterred, Saki chases Kousaka through the various activities of the club, from costume-playing and comic conventions to video gaming and collecting anime figures–learning more than she ever wanted to about the humorous world of the Japanese fan . . .

Website

Well didn’t follow it in the beginning, and by this part of the post I think I’m watching way too much

Recorder to Randoseru Mi by Seven

Third Season of Recorder to Randoseru.

Miyagawa Atsushi is an 11-year-old boy. Since he is 180 centimeters tall and has a grown-up looking build, he has always been running into troubles. On the other hand, his 17-year-old elder sister Atsumi is only 137 centimeters tall and has a childish looking build. Atsumi takes good care of Atsushi, who acts his true age.

Website

I watched the first few episodes and it was interesting and cute, but because it was one of those 5 minute shows that don’t really have cliff-hangers I kind of forgot about it. Didn’t even realize it had a season 2.

Tamayura: More Aggressive by TYO Animation

Second season of Tamayura: Hitotose

Sawatari Fu, also known as Potte, recently moved to her late father’s hometown and is restarting her life at her new school. She is typically nervous and shy but when it comes to photography, she is extremely passionate, especially since it makes her feel still connected to her dad. Fu becomes close friends with Kaoru, Norie and Maon and they spend the best times of their lives together.

Website

Second season of Tamayura. I remember watching the first episode aaaages ago, and I think becoming more aggressive wouldn’t pose much of a challenge seeing as it looked like one of those fluffy cute school girl anime

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory by David Production

This is Gamindustri. Beings called the Goddesses rule the countries of this unreal world. The four Goddesses govern four states: Planeptune, Lastation, Lowee, and Leanbox. For many long years, these countries fought each other over the Shares, the source of the Goddess power. However, fearful that the conflict would pointlessly erode their countries’ strength, the Goddesses signed a Friendship Treaty forbidding them from taking Shares by force.

Under the treaty, the Goddesses and their younger sisters took a step forward to a new stage in their relations. It was the dawn of a new, dymanic era marked occasionally by shared laughter, disputes as well cooperation. What does the future hold in store for Gamindustri?

Website

I was already on WTH mode when I read the title, rolled my eyes at the summary, took one look at the poster and waved it off. Definitely not my type. Looks like a game adaptation anyway, and more often than not the transition from game to anime is really awkward.

High School DxD New by TNK

Sequel to High School DxD.

Hyodo Issei is a (perverted) high school boy. When he goes out on a date with his first girlfriend Asano Yuma, he is killed by her. Her true identity is Reinare, a fallen angel sent by a secret society Grigori to eliminate dangerous divine weapons. Issei is reincarnated as a devil by his senpai Rias Gremory, a Duke of Hell. Issei serves as Rias’s low rank devil and fights against the fallen angels.

Website

Really not my kind of anime. Read the first review on MyAnimeList that went ‘each character has his/her own unique personality’ but it’s probably more like personalitits. It does have good reviews and the ratings are quite high so it’s probably not as bad as I think it is, but I’ve had enough of manga/anime where you can’t see the story for all the boobs in front of you.

Btw check out the link for the website – what a name lol

Kiniro Mosaic by Studio Gokumi

The story begins with Oomiya Shinobu, a 15-year-old, seemingly pure Japanese girl who actually did a homestay in Great Britain. Even after coming back to Japan, she still misses her time overseas. One day, an airmail letter arrives from Alice, the girl in Shinobu’s host family in Great Britain. The letter reads: Shinobu, I’m coming to Japan! The Japanese/British girls’ mixed comedy follows the lives of Shinobu, Alice, and other girls from both Japan and Great Britain.

Website

Just did not sound interesting at all.

Kitaku-bu Katsudou Kiroku by NOMAD

When a friend asks Natsuki what high school club she’s going to join, she cheerfully responds “the go-home club” (meaning, she’s not going to join any of them). However, she soon realizes that this club actually exists at her high school, and she’s just expressed interest in joining it! Before she knows it, she ends up as one of the two new members of “the go-home club,” which is a small group of eccentric school girls. One of the girls likes fighting bears, while another is ridiculously rich. But what exactly constitutes the activities of “the go-home club”?

Website

Yep, really not my kind of anime.

Renai Lab – Love Lab – by Dogakobo

The Fujisaki Girls Academy is known for their school body being composed of very proper students. The most prominent one of them is Maki, the student president who is admired by her classmates for her calm and polite demeanor. On the other hand, Kurahashi Riko is also admired but for having a very forward and boyish personality. Riko accidentally walks into Maki while she’s practicing kissing with a pillow and learns that she isn’t what everyone thinks she is. Riko is forced into keeping Maki’s secret and join her in practicing all aspects of romance like holding hands and more.

Website

Still not my kind of anime

Brothers Conflict by Brain’s Base

Hinata Ema is the only daughter of a famous adventurer, Hinata Rintarou. One day, Ema learns that Rintarou is going to remarry with a successful apparel maker named Asahina Miwa. Since she doesn’t want to disturb them, Ema decides to move out and live with her 11 new brothers in a mansion called Sunrise Residence. As they live under the same roof, romance is starting to grow between Ema and the Asahina brothers.

Website

Brain’s Base or not, I took one look at the title, another look at the poster, and barely bothered to read the summary. A sparkly shoujo anime with a reverse-harem – no. Just, no. I already feel annoyed just looking at it. Seems like it’s also based off from a game, which probably makes it even more annoying.

Futari wa Milky Holmes by J.C. Staff/Artland

Website

Just never followed it.

Now the Imperial Church has come for Shino and Sosuke and they must find eight mystical gems and their owners or face a fate worse than death at the hands of the Church.

Website

I remember being completely unimpressed by the everything-but-explicitly-announced-shounen-ai anime. Textbook storyline with the characters that just appeal towards the general fujoshi audience.

Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS by project No.9

I remember hating everything about this anime so axing it for this summer and for life

Teekyuu 2 by MAPPA

Second season of Teekyuu.

Teekyuu is based on a sports comedy manga of the same name featuring four high school girls who belong to a tennis club.

Website

Even if it’s 5 minutes per episode like the previous season, still not gonna watch

So yes. I think there’s way too much I’m looking forward to watching this summer, so I’m pretty sure I won’t be bored. Any that you’re particularly looking out for? Do tell! =D

  1. And here I thought I would only watch Silver Spoon xD

This summer will be good for fangirls. And Makai Ouji is from Zero-Sum, not-BL-but-BL xD

    • Hahaha I practically had the same response – the only anime I knew that was coming up before I checked the listing out was Silver Spoon. And when I finally did check it, there’s this smorgasbord of really interesting sounding anime… Gah!! @_@

Lol and yes it does seem like a good one for fangirls XD There’s not that much shoujo anime in comparison with shounen this season, but the shoujo anime that are around are selling themselves pretty well to their target audience >=D
