Round 2 – The Final Round | Manga Olympics for Bloggers Poll

Dear everyone, as you are aware, this post and event continuation is largely overdue. An unfortunate turn of events that has led this situation, factors include technical problems, mis-communication, a lack of access to the internet and the general world being against us. We’ve been continuously throwing dates around and changing dates, which was not very helpful and most problems are due to the fact that there were a lot of flaws in the schedule which we only noticed after MOB had started. So now finally, we’ve decided to cut MOB short to Round 2 simply being the final round.

We’ve also decided to collate all votes from all polls to determine results. This final round will last until Friday 16th August 2013. Without further rants, here is the final round of posts!

ALL PARTICIPANTS PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DATE OF THE POLL CLOSURE.

Blog post: Similar Brothers, Different Paths

Preview: So I’ve been reading Adachi Mitsuru’s Touch in the past couple of weeks. My opinions on it are more or less public record. The original reason I got started on it was to do a serious rundown of all the baseball series I knew of (since talking about baseball manga without mentioning Touch would be like talking about great basketball players and not mentioning Bill Russell). However, an interesting theme constantly showed up in that manga that I’ve seen in another series, Space Brothers.* Namely, both series focus on a relationship between two talented brothers who take their talents in different directions. And both do a fascinating job of exploring what caused those brothers to walk their separate paths. Click Here To Read the Rest of the Post. Continue reading

Blog post: “Shoujo with a male lead? Isn’t that BL or yaoi? You gonna talk about that?” The Draw of Shoujo Manga with a Male Protagonist

Post preview:

Shoujo manga—especially titles that situate romance and relationships front and center—tend to pivot around a female protagonist. This ostensibly makes it easier for the target readers to identify with the main character, thus enhancing the vicarious experience of falling in love, making a relationship work, and achieving Happy Even After. The additional promise of character growth ups that possibility of character identification and emotional capital.| Click Here To Read the Rest of the Post. Continue reading

Be part of Manga Olympics for Bloggers (MOB-Supplement)! – Manga Blogging Challenge!

609555

(MOB – Stands for Manga Olympics for Bloggers)

THIS POST WILL BE UPDATED PERIODICALLY (Last update 25/06/2013)

The second week of the event has officially started! I am aware that both rounds were delayed, so the duration of the event will be pushed further accordingly to make up lost time. So, you’ve seen MOB’s official participating blogs coming up(if you haven’t I highly recommend you do) with a lot of great posts, and it is no easy-task. MOB’s participants had to complete posts within a time-frame as well as gather a lot of determination and dedication to blog, especially when you’re in a ‘kind of forced to‘ scenario. Now, we’ve decided to introduce a little supplement to MOB.

There were a lot of bloggers that expressed a lot of interest in MOB, but could not commit due to time, date and other constraints, now we’ve decided to introduce a little supplement to MOB. This supplement event is a more watered down version, well not really watered down, but a flexible free-and-easy version, except for one big rule – you have to blog about one of the topics given below and that this is entirely separate from the Official MOB tourney. So essentially, this is a ‘manga blog – topic recommendation post.’

The main aim of this supplement is that we hope to enhance the MOB experience and challenge some of you as well as allow those who were unable to participate in the main MOB a chance to try your hand in this event.

Top Anime Moments We Can Relate To Part 2 – Our Second Choice~

Greetings, this is Chungky, and welcome to part 2 of our Top 3 Anime Moments – presenting our second  choices. Our first foray was unexpected entitled “Nah’ mean Nah’ mean” by arawr if y’all haven’t noticed. Check that out, it had our 3rd choices in it.

Please find my 2nd choice below:

Tonari no Kaibutsukun – Episode 2 | When Shizuku questions Asako’s life on the internet.

tonari1

Okay, this is a bit of a personal kind of a relation but I think many people have kind-of experienced this sometime in their lives, especially when we’re all caught up with the internet. Of all the characters in Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, I associate myself with Natsume Asako the most, mainly because of the fact that she loves her internet life just as much as I love mine. It’s really like those times where I’m like, really, really enjoying myself online and like, someone just doesn’t get it. Continue reading

One-Shot for the Weekend – Mario (マリオ)

MarioMario (マリオ)

Manga-ka: Kishimoto Masashi

Genre: Action, Drama, Shounen, Romance

Mario is a half-Japanese, half Italian mercenary  who prioritizes money above everything else. He gets assigned to work together with Saori, another hitman who hates men and refuses to talk to them.

Published as a one-shot in 2013 with Jump SQ .

———

Mario 1It’s pretty much the end of the weekend so it’s coming pretty late, but here’s our recommended one-shot! I’m currently undergoing a Naruto manga marathon, so I decided to choose one of Kishimoto Masashi’s one-shots – Mario. He’s mentioned it before in one of those author rants’ pages in Naruto, where he expressed that Mario was probably one of the best stories that he’d ever come up with. So with no further ado, I jumped into it the moment I saw the one-shot.

Mario 3

I didn’t know what to expect from it at all before reading Mario – didn’t read the summary or anything. If I unattached it from its Jump SQ label and the fact that the manga-ka is one of the most successful shounen manga-ka to date, I would honestly think it’s a seinen one-shot. There’s a more subdued feel to it compared to the usual in-yo-face shounen action.

Mario gives off a very jazzy feel throughout the whole one-shot. From the yakuza/mafia setting, the black suits and black dresses, the character interactions and just everything overall, there is this general feeling of coolness. The kind of story that depicts a romanticized version of the mafia. This whole ‘jazzy’ feel is really what gives of the seinen feel, and in fact is a bit of a weakness for those who are more used to the ba da bing ba da BOOM aspect of shounen Mario 2manga. There’s no sudden crescendo of action or ground breaking-ly embarrassing romantic confessions – everything seems pretty subdued with a mature over tone.

In other words, it can seem a bit dull.

Not saying that it’s bad or anything, but Mario really seems more like a story that can’t develop in a one-shot since it’s the type that would usually build up on the relationships between the characters; and these relationships can’t be addressed and comprehended in a one-shot. Still, quite an okay read for a jazzy weekend.

Rating: 3.4/5.0
